Though the War of 1812 ended in a stalemate with The Treaty of Ghent, in 1815, rather than on the battlefield, the citizens of the United States had good reason to feel proud of the results. Hardly anyone expected that the upstart and undermanned American military would stand a chance against the might British navy, but by battling to a stalemate, Americans were justified in their belief that the democratic experience was working, and that their military would be able to defend their ideals in the decades and centuries to come.
