Along the eastern seaboard, the British won significant battles, most notably the Burning of Washington, wherein President Madison was forced to flee to Virginia. The loss of the White House and other significant public buildings was a major blow to American confidence, but the Americans were successful in their defense of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, inspiring Francis Scott Key to pen The Star Spangled Banner.
