Clearly one of the great Scottish surnames and with a significant history the Bruce clan, settled in southwest Scotland following William the Conqueror in 1066 in his invasion of England. The History of the Bruce clan began with a rise to kingship for the next three centuries with the clan's most famous leader Robert the Bruce.

Robert the Bruce challenged King Edward I of England and defeated him spectacularly in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn. Robert the Bruce was crowned king of Scotland in 1306. In 1328 he signed the peace treaty with England and died shortly thereafter.
